John Comer vividly re-creates his experiences as a top-turret gunner / flight engineer of a B-17 squadron that was thrown against the best pilots the Luftwaffe could offer. He was a member of the 533rd Squadron, 8th Air Force, 1st Division, 381st Group. His powerful narrative is devoted to the men who flew the planes, dropped the bombes, fired the guns. Their everyday life is terror and fatigue. Comer recorded it all in a diary, and the reader shares the fears of the flight crew through their 25 mission.
